How we work

We begin with meeting with a the child and their whanau for a chat and a fun, play-based session with one of our team. This helps us identify and recommend ways we may support the child’s development, while meeting the goals of the whaanau.

The key worker and whaanau work collaboratively to develop a tailored Individual Eduction Plan, setting progress goals every 6 months.

Through a range of services, tamariki are provided with support to experience and practice the next step in their learning journey. Whaanau are provided with resources and knowledge about development within the learning journey, and how to support their child across all of their everyday environments.

Depending on these goals, our services may include:

  • Developmental assessments

  • 1:1 therapy focussing on skill development

  • Group based targeted skill development

  • Group sessions/ECE classes

  • Personalised resources for home and community

  • Whaanau support and education

  • Support within a child's community early learning centre

  • Support with transition to school

  • Provision of specialised equipment

  • Referrals to other specialists

Our Services

Early Intervention Support

Wana Tamariki Early Intervention service enables tamariki and whaanau to grow and develop in all areas of their everyday lives. This means we work with families in their home, and at their child’s early childhood centre.

Our wonderful team of Education Support Workers (ESW) visit a child's Early Childhood Education (ECE) Centre for a scheduled time each week to assist the child to engage with others and access the learning environment.

Our Early Intervention Specialists also assist with Transition to School, offering support in looking at schooling options and ORS applications completed when ongoing needs indicate eligibility.

ECE Group Sessions

Our specialised Pre-School classes focus on skills to support the transition to school. Early numeracy, literacy, pre-writing skills, routine, and self-care skills are incorporated into topics to extend children’s awareness of the world around them. It is a very beneficial learning environment for children with mild to moderate needs who may have missed earlier intervention and are lagging behind in achieving developmental milestones.

Our Centre is licensed and chartered as an Early Childhood Centre (ECE). The Ministry of Education issues the license, and the Centre must operate under the licensing requirement of the Education (Early Childhood Centres) Regulations 2008.
